Florida issues a temporary permit, valid up to six months, while a surgical recovery limits your walking.
Conditions in This Group
- A hip or knee replacement
- Spinal surgery, including a fusion or a discectomy
- A repaired fracture of the leg, ankle or foot
- Major abdominal or cardiac surgery with a restricted recovery
- An amputation, during the period before a prosthesis
A temporary permit is valid for up to six months and your county charges $15 for it. If your condition does not improve, you can apply again.

What to Have on Hand
The practitioner will ask about the things below. Get the information and any documents together now to streamline the process.
- What procedure you had, and on what date
- Who your surgeon was, and at which hospital or practice
- Whether you are still under their care
- How long your surgeon has said recovery will take
- Whether you have been given restrictions on walking or weight-bearing
- Whether you have your operative report or discharge summary
Answer as your situation actually is. Records help but are not required, and we can request them from your own doctor if that is easier.
