Your Permit Expires. The Certification Has to Be New
A Florida permanent disabled parking permit is valid for four years and expires on the holder's birthday. Renewing it needs a fresh medical certification, not a copy of the old one.
When Yours Expires
Look at the placard itself. The expiration month and year are printed on it, and a permanent permit always expires on your birthday, four years after it was issued.
Your county cannot renew without a current certification, and an expired placard is not valid to use. Starting a month ahead leaves room for anything that needs sorting out.
What a Renewal Needs
- A newly completed HSMV 83039, signed by a licensed practitioner
- Your current Florida driver license or ID card
- Your existing placard number, if you have it to hand
The medical certification cannot be older than twelve months when your county receives it. That is the rule that catches people out: a form signed two years ago for the last renewal is not acceptable now.
If Your Condition Has Not Changed
It still needs a new evaluation. Florida requires the certification to reflect your condition now, and a practitioner cannot certify something they have not evaluated.
In practice a renewal is usually quicker to complete than a first application, because you already know what the questions are asking.
